One of the most common questions I get is:

“What shoes do you wear with a dirndl?”

Short answer… almost anything.

Traditionally, women wear Mary Janes or low heels with dirndl socks, but modern Oktoberfest style has loosened up a lot. These days you’ll see everything from ballet flats to ankle boots and even sneakers.

Overall, you're looking for shoes that are comfortable so you can wear them for potential looooong days spent on your feet, dancing and partying in your dirndl. But you also don’t want to be THAT girl wearing old, dirty, dad sneakers with a  traditional dress… not a chic look. Personally, I like to go with something a little more playful and trendy with my dirndl outfits.

If you’re wondering what actually works with a dirndl, here are some of the best options.

Mary Janes (The Traditional Choice)

If you want the most classic Oktoberfest look, go with Mary Jane shoes.

These low-heeled shoes pair beautifully with dirndl skirts and look especially cute with traditional dirndl socks or knee-high socks.

They’re comfortable enough for walking and still feel very authentic to Bavarian style.

Best for:

  • Traditional dirndls
  • Oktoberfest in Munich
  • Cultural festivals

Ballet Flats (Easy and Comfortable)

Ballet flats are one of the easiest shoes to wear with a dirndl.

They’re lightweight, comfortable, and come in endless colors so it’s easy to find a pair that complements your outfit.

They’re a great option if you plan to spend the entire day exploring Oktoberfest.

Best for:

  • Casual dirndl looks
  • All-day walking
  • Travel-friendly outfits

Ankle Boots (Very Popular at Oktoberfest)

If you walk around Oktoberfest in Munich, you’ll notice a lot of ankle boots. Booties add a little edge to a dirndl while still looking stylish and intentional.

Suede boots or boots with buckles work especially well with modern dirndls.

Best for:

  • Modern dirndl styling
  • Fall weather
  • Outdoor festivals

Sandals (Best for Summer Festivals)

Sandals can work with a dirndl, especially at summer festivals.

However, I usually don’t recommend open-toed shoes for Oktoberfest in Munich. Beer gets spilled. A lot. If you do wear sandals, choose sturdy ones that won’t slip off easily.

Motorcycle Boots (For an Edgy Dirndl Look)

If you want to toughen up the traditional dirndl silhouette a bit, motorcycle boots are a surprisingly great option.

The structured bodice and full skirt of a dirndl actually pair really well with heavier boots. It creates that classic sweet-meets-tough contrast that looks intentional instead of costume-y.

Motorcycle boots also solve a practical problem… Oktoberfest grounds can get muddy, crowded, and chaotic. A sturdy boot protects your feet way better than delicate shoes.

A few styling tips:

  • Stick with mid-calf or ankle motorcycle boots
  • Black leather works with almost every dirndl color
  • Keep the rest of the outfit simple so the boots don’t overwhelm the look

This style works especially well with shorter dirndls or mini dirndls, where the boots become part of the outfit instead of competing with it.

Heels (For Party Nights)

Heels can look amazing with a dirndl, especially for evening Oktoberfest parties.

But here’s the honest truth…

If you plan to stay in the beer tents all day, heels can become torture pretty quickly. If you do wear them, bring a backup pair of flats.

Can You Wear Sneakers with a Dirndl?

Okay… confession time.

Ten years ago... (hell, 5 years ago!) if you asked me if sneakers with a dirndl were acceptable I probably would have given you a very judgey look and said absolutely not.

But fashion evolves… and honestly, Gen Z has completely normalized wearing sneakers with dresses. Including dirndls. And you know what? If it’s styled right… it actually looks really cute. (and goddess knows, they're comfortable!)

The key is making sure the sneakers look intentional, not like you grabbed whatever was by the door on your way out.

Here are a few quick rules if you want to wear sneakers with your dirndl:

Stick with clean sneakers

Dirty gym shoes ruin the look immediately. Crisp white sneakers, Converse, Vans, or fashion sneakers work best.

Avoid bulky “dad sneakers”

The chunky running shoe trend does not pair well with a dirndl silhouette. Sleeker styles look much better.

Match the vibe of your dirndl

  • Classic dirndl → white sneakers or Converse
  • Modern dirndl → platform sneakers or Vans
  • Edgy dirndl → black high tops

Add socks: Dirndl socks or knee socks with sneakers look adorable and help keep the outfit feeling intentional instead of random.

The Best Shoes for Oktoberfest

At the end of the day, the best shoes to wear with a dirndl are the ones that balance style and comfort.

Some of the most popular options include:

  • Mary Janes
  • Ballet flats
  • Ankle boots
  • Sneakers
  • Heels for evening events

Oktoberfest involves long days of walking, standing, and dancing, so choose shoes that will keep your feet happy.

And remember… dirndls are meant to be fun. Don’t stress too much about rules. Wear what feels good and enjoy the party.

Dirndl Shoes FAQ

What shoes do you traditionally wear with a dirndl?

Traditionally, women wear Mary Jane shoes with a low heel when wearing a dirndl. These are often paired with dirndl socks or knee-high socks. This classic combination is common at traditional Oktoberfest events and Bavarian festivals.

Can you wear sneakers with a dirndl?

Yes. Sneakers have become increasingly popular with dirndls, especially at modern Oktoberfest celebrations. Clean white sneakers or Converse-style shoes work best. The key is making sure they look intentional and styled with the outfit.

What shoes should you not wear with a dirndl?

Avoid worn-out athletic sneakers, flip flops, or bulky running shoes. These can make the outfit look sloppy instead of stylish. If comfort is your priority, choose flats, loafers, or stylish sneakers instead.

Are heels appropriate with a dirndl?

Yes. Heels can look great with a dirndl, especially for evening Oktoberfest parties or formal events. However, keep in mind that Oktoberfest involves long hours of standing, walking, and dancing, so many women bring a backup pair of flats.

Can you wear sandals with a dirndl?

Sandals work well for summer festivals or warm weather events. However, they are not ideal for Oktoberfest in Munich because beer tents get crowded and drinks often spill on the floor.

What are the most comfortable shoes to wear at Oktoberfest?

The most comfortable shoes for Oktoberfest are usually:

  • Ballet flats
  • Ankle boots
  • Mary Janes
  • Stylish sneakers

Comfort matters because you will likely spend the entire day walking, standing, and dancing.

Do shoes have to match your dirndl?

No. In fact, a bit of contrast can make the outfit more interesting. Neutral shoes like black, brown, or white tend to work with almost any dirndl color.

Can you wear boots with a dirndl?

Yes. Ankle boots or booties are extremely popular at Oktoberfest and give a modern edge to a dirndl outfit. Suede boots or boots with small heels are especially flattering with knee-length dirndls.

Just read your newsletter about running shoes with a dirndl and I’m team yes! I wore mine to Munich last year and I was incredibly comfortable and could dance all day / night long. Mine were not like in your photo but I thought they worked.
