One of the most frequently asked questions around here is… “Now, what kind of shoes to wear with a dirndl?" And my answer is, “Whatever shoes you want!” That’s not a very specific answer, but I’m not exactly one to follow the “dirndl dress rules.” When it comes to dirndls, there are no hard and fast rules about what shoes you should be wearing. It all depends on the kind of look that you’d like to go for – from traditional Bavarian looks to modern dirndl. Whatever shoes you feel comfortable and confident in, is the right choice to wear with your dirndl.

But when it comes to shoes for women AND dirndls I have a couple of ideas for fun alternatives to traditional designs. Below are some styling tips on what I recommend wearing with your dirndl. PLUS, I got some great insights from my travel blogger pals Ashley from My Wanderlusty Life and Christina from Happy to Wander who have both been to Oktoberfest in Germany multiple times.

The basic rules are comfort and style, so you’ll want to find a nice blend of the two. What is currently trending in Germany are booties and flats. If you’re wearing traditional attire, opt for loafers or Mary Janes. For something fun and unique, try wearing ankle boots with accessory tassels or buckles; they will add a bold touch to your dirndl look.

Overall, you're looking for shoes that are comfortable so you can wear them for potential looooong days spent on your feet, dancing and partying in your dirndl. But you also don’t want to be THAT girl wearing old New Balance sneakers or dad sneakers with a traditional dress… not a chic look. Personally, I like to go with something a little more playful and trendy with my dirndl outfits. Below is an assortment of shoe styles that both Christina and Ashley said were frequently seen at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.

The basics

Traditionally, one would wear a Mary-Jane style shoe with a low heel and dirndl socks. (Here is a link to an online store to order my favorite dirndl socks.) For a more modern take on the Mary-Jane, look for shoes with some accessory details to them like buckles or laces. They are a great a perfect pair for dirndl skirts of any length. Don’t worry about having to be super matchy-matchy with your dirndl dress and shoes. A nice contrast of colors can be very eye-catching and fashionable.

Check out King Brad’s stylish trachten shoes. They typically make Trachten shoes of high-quality materials, such as leather and suede, which gives them a classic look that is perfect for traditional Oktoberfest attire and complements your dirndl dress.

For a super casual look

Go with your favorite flats. My favorite are my TOMS. They’re comfortable and they come in so many fun patterns and colors so you'll be able to match them with a dirndl of any style. Plus, you can easily dress them up or down depending on the occasion. However, most folks prefer a ballet flat. Plus, the variety of colors and designs available mean that you can find something to fit your dirndl style, whether it’s a classic black or a bright filigree pattern.

Flats are a timeless go-to. Whether you choose some basic ballet flats or ones with a cute buckle, they match really well with any dirndl vibe, from super traditional clothing to more funky styles. They're great for dancing the polka or just strolling around the festival all day, giving you style and comfort without all the blisters.

For an outdoorsy look

Try a bootie that brings out your inner high-fashion alpine mountaineer. Look for something with a bit of lift and detailing, like a wedge heel or an ankle strap. Suede boots are great for a rustic dirndl look and keep your feet warm on those chilly autumn days.

Cute ankle boots are a great way to give your traditional clothing a bit of an edge while still keeping it classic. They're super handy when the weather's iffy—mud? Not an issue. Cold toes? Not happening. Plus, they look awesome with everything from traditional clothes to a fun modern dirndl.

For a more summer-y look

I would go with nice comfortable sandals or a fancy flip flop. However, do keep in mind that this type of footwear is more for a summer festival. Open-toed shoes are NOT recommended to wear with your dirndl for Oktoberfest in Munich... too much potential spillage.

For a trendy look

Go with trendy booties - this is really all the rage at Oktoberfest lately. Look for shoes with some fashionable details like buckles, straps, and tassels. Or find booties in interesting colors and textures. You want to make sure you’re making a statement with your dirndl shoes, so don’t be afraid to go for an eye-catching look!

Ankle boots are such a fun shoe. They’re perfect for those who aim to match their dirndl with something unique, and they also provide extra support when you’re walking around the festival grounds all day. Just make sure to pick a pair that is comfortable and stylish!

For that punk look

Yes, you can bust out your hightops. These are perfect for those who want to mix up the traditional dirndl style with something more modern and edgy. Bonus points if you find a high-top that matches your dirndl… although, I think the contrast can look really cool too.

This option is for those ladies who are here to party and stay comfy. They’re definitely more of a modern twist, but pairing hightops with a dirndl has totally become a thing—and it’s adorable.

For a fancy schmancy look

Bust out those heels, baby (but not at the expense of your feeties. If you are going to be a super grouch at Oktoberfest because you have 4 blisters and your feet are throbbing - mmm not so cute anymore). Heels are great for Oktoberfest party nights, especially paired with your dirndl, but they can definitely get uncomfortable. Do keep a pair of flats in your bag just in case.

For an edgier look

Definitely try a motorcycle boot or booty. Motorcycle boots look great with dirndls and provide extra support when you’re on your feet all day. They're such a fun twist on the traditional dirndl look that no one will see coming.

What I wear

My personal favorite dirndl shoes are my TOMS wedges. They add a bit of lift and you can find them in so many fun colors and designs! They are really comfortable and go with pretty much every single dirndl I have. I wear these ALL THE TIME!

For a fun addition

Add some knee socks! Knee socks always look so cute and can be worn with any style of shoe and dirndl. And if you want to get even more traditional, I recommend a pair of lederhosen socks… they are super trendy right now!

To Sum Up

When it comes to dressing up for Oktoberfest or a traditional German event, there are plenty of options of shoes to choose from to wear with your dirndl.. You can go for classic black patent leather Mary Janes or try something modern like bright red ankle boots. For a more casual look, you can also opt for some stylish sneakers or loafers. Don’t forget to accessorize with funky socks and tights!

Remember, comfort is key when it comes to choosing shoes to wear with your perfect dirndl. You want something that will keep your feet supported while still looking stylish. Also, keep in mind the weather and terrain - if you plan to be walking around a lot, you’ll want something with good traction.

And don’t forget to have fun with it! Your shoes can be the perfect accessory for you to look great in your traditional or modern dirndl and help show off your unique personality. So go ahead and express yourself with your shoe choice - after all, that’s what Oktoberfest is all about! Enjoy!

Just read your newsletter about running shoes with a dirndl and I’m team yes! I wore mine to Munich last year and I was incredibly comfortable and could dance all day / night long. Mine were not like in your photo but I thought they worked.
