Oktoberfest Guy Code - How to Wear Lederhosen
Dressing for Oktoberfest isn't super complicated, but there are a couple things you should keep in mind if you're a guy and you want to look well dressed. We've put together a quick list of things to keep in mind when getting dressed for Oktoberfest.
Your options include: Lederhosen (with or without suspenders... assuming they don't fall down), a trachtenshirt, a Loden Jacket, your Bayern Füsball jersey, jeans, khakis, a plaid shirt, a Bavarian style vest, Bavarian wool hat.
Your options do NOT include: Lederhosen swim trunks, a lederhosen Halloween costume, a novelty t-shirt with a dirndl or lederhosen on it, a cooking apron with lederhosen on it, any ridiculous hats. (Lederhosen literally means leather pants. So if they're not made of leather... then they're not lederhosen and it will look silly at Oktoberfest.)
Not Lederhosen... NOT for Oktoberfest (or any event for that matter)
Lederhosen Code: Wearing traditional lederhosen to Oktoberfest is perfect, but don't make the mistake of pairing it with your white tube socks and a dirty fraternity t-shirt. Make sure you have nice shoes (not necessarily dress shoes... you can wear your Doc Martins), but be sure to have the right socks. You can pick some up in Germany or pre-order them from Ernst Licht (ernstlicht.com/socks). Shirt wise, you can go casual by wearing a Bayern soccer jersey or go a bit more formal/traditional with a nice plaid trachtenshirt. (Check out the available Rare Trachtenshirts by clicking here). The biggest thing to keep in mind when wearing lederhosen is just to look nice. You don't want to disrespect the local traditions by looking schlampich. (Where do you buy lederhosen? Click Here!)
T-shirt code: You can most certainly wear jeans and a t-shirt to Okotberfest, but don't wear a t-shirt with a girl's chest in a dirndl screen-printed on it... that's just tacky, the end.
Hat Code: A classic wool hat or fun Bavarian Spitzhut is perfect, so there is no need to make a fool of yourself by wearing a chicken hat or a cheapo peter-pan hat. Those might be fun souvenirs for your buddies, but not classy enough for Oktoberfest.
Vest Code: There are not too many vest styles that wouldn't work for Oktoberfest. There are Austrian-style vests, Bavarian-style vests, classic vests, modern vests... simply pair it with a nice pair of jeans, khakis, or dress pants, a matching shirt and your good to go!
