What Should Men Wear to Oktoberfest? A Guy’s Guide to Lederhosen

Dressing for Oktoberfest isn't super complicated, but there are a couple things you should keep in mind if you're a guy and you want to look well dressed. Here's a quick rundown.

Your options include:

Lederhosen (with or without suspenders... assuming they don't fall down), a trachtenshirt, a Loden jacket, your Bayern Fußball jersey, jeans, khakis, a plaid shirt, a traditional Bavarian-style vest, or a Bavarian wool hat.

Your options do NOT include:

Lederhosen swim trunks, lederhosen Halloween costumes, a novelty t-shirt with a dirndl or lederhosen printed on it, a cooking apron with lederhosen on it, or any ridiculous hats. (Lederhosen literally means leather pants. So if they're not made of leather... they're not lederhosen, and it will look silly.)

Lederhosen Code:

Wearing traditional German lederhosen is perfect. They're knee-length traditional attire, but don't make the mistake of pairing them with white tube socks and a dirty fraternity t-shirt. Make sure you have nice shoes (not necessarily dress shoes — Doc Martens work great), and the right socks (wool socks are ideal). Shirt-wise, you can go casual with a Bayern soccer jersey or go a bit more formal with a nice plaid trachtenshirt. You can absolutely wear jeans and a t-shirt to a German event, but don't wear a t-shirt with a German girl's chest in a dirndl screen-printed on it... that's just tacky, the end.

Hat Code:

A classic wool hat or fun Bavarian Spitzhut is perfect. No need to make a fool of yourself with a chicken hat or a cheapo Peter Pan hat. Those might be fun souvenirs for your buddies, but they're not classy enough for a traditional German festival.

Vest Code:

There are not too many vest styles that wouldn't work, and the sizes and fit vary! There are Austrian-style vests, Bavarian-style vests, classic vests, modern vests... simply pair one with a nice pair of jeans, khakis, or dress pants and a matching shirt and you're good to go!
