Each and every year the runways are full of the newest in high fashion trends that eventually trickle down into our closets and I have been keeping an eye on not only those fashions, but also what's going on in the dirndl fashion world. A traditional outfit never really goes out of style, but there are definitely fabrics, styles and colors that come and go.
Currently, there's an exciting mix of playful colors and surprising twists taking shape. Here is what trends I anticipate will find their way onto the Wiesn' for 2024.
Dirndl Color Meanings and History
The dirndl style has a rich history that dates back several centuries. Originally, dirndls were the traditional dress worn by peasant women in Germany and Austria. These dresses were practical and functional, designed to endure the demands of rural life. Women who wore dirndls were doing things like raising little kids + caring for livestock + helping on the farm + doing the cooking and cleaning... the dirndl was the ultimate house dress! (and these women were the ultimate badasses!) Dirndls were made from sturdy fabrics like wool and linen, and the style varied depending on the region and season.
