Dirndl Stories: Dirndl origins and everyday wear
Dirndls originated as a day dress with an apron and blouse for folks to wear while they worked in rural areas surrounding the Alps. Since washing clothes was not as easy as tossing it in the machine, these 2 separate pieces were very practical because they could wash the blouse and apron more often. Over time the style became more common, recognized as a regional folk dress and eventually it evolved into a style of fashion.
The dirndls popularity declined following WWII, but saw a resurgence in the 1990s and again the late 2010s. Like all fashion, the dirndl has changed and evolved over the decades.
One of the key reasons Rare Dirndl was founded was to add more fun, personality and awesomeness to the dirndl world… but recently, you know… 2020… things changed. And thus our dirndl designs did too. We took it back a bit, like a lotta bit! Our Everyday Dirndl is our modern version of what those who first wore dirndls were wearing to do their work in the fields and around the home.
This dirndl is literally designed for everyday wear. And lucky for us we have washing machines, so this dirndl is machine washable and easy to care for. The solid color with a matching solid apron is ideal for a casual dirndl look. Folks at the market will just assume it’s an adorable sundress! Plus it’s super easy to dress up or down with accessories! Check out these REAL customers who have worn their Everyday Dirndls to do just about anything and everything.

But don’t just take our word for it. Here is what Erin K. had to say about her Everyday Dirndl
“I received my Everyday Dirndl this week and it did not disappoint! I ordered the dress in brown, and also an additional apron. The dress is very flattering on so many different bodies and I, as a plus size person, felt comfortable and confident wearing mine while doing lots of “mom things” (cooking, laundry, and chasing kids around). I’m 5’9” and it hits me right below the knee. I also love the additional apron, it’s beautiful and was such a fun add-on that goes really well with my new dirndl.”
